2021 Jazz Events at Newham
The last Sunday of the month sees Newham Mechanics Institute, a fabulous little venue in the most charming of towns, turning into Macedon Ranges' most swinging hot bed of top-class jazz.
The concerts are seated affairs. We serve a bar of premier locally sourced beer and wine and we have a few bar snacks and delicious cheese platters available at afternoon concerts. Evening concerts have the bar and bar snacks on offer to complement your listening experience (i.e., no cheese platters are available at the evening concerts) .
Tickets are limited at this stage to adhere to spacing requirements, and you need to purchase them online before the gigs. There are no walk-ins or tickets available at the door.
We kicked off with a sold-out event of a fabulous 5 piece jazz band- Mat Jodrell, Steve Grant, Sam Lemann, James Clark and myself- which went down a treat. February was singer/songwriter duo Kingsville which is me and my long-term bestie and we had a wonderful afternoon of live music. March was jazz with a bit of blues thrown in for good measure with Dai Jones, Nigel Maclean, James, Tony Floyd and myself and it was just magical.
April's gig was Django Reinhardt-inspired French jazz with an extraordinary line up of 3 amazing guitarists, Peter Baylor, Craig Fermanis, and James Sherlock, a violinist extraordinaire, Nigel Maclean, myself, and James. Oo la la la indeed!
May is cancelled sadly. It was The Syncopators but is not to be courtesy of statewide lockdown- we shall definitely book them again for later in the year- apologies for any inconvenience.
June was a smoking a rhythm section of piano (Steve Grant), bass (James Clark) and drums (Tony Floyd), with trumpeter/vocalist Gianni Marinucci, joining me for a fine foray into my favourite songs of a bunch of what I consider to be the best jazz singers- specifically Ella Fitzgerald, Doris Day, Astrud Gilberto, Julie London, Sarah Vaughan, Peggy Lee, Keely Smith, Caterina Valente and Anita O'Day. It was brilliant fun- including Tony's impressions of Norman Gunston's jazz renditions.
July's details are below- 3 masterful musicians coming to join James and I for another delightful afternoon of special music and camaraderie. Note it is afternoon concert only (it's a bit cold and dark and wintery for the extra evening sitting for the next few months).
I hope you are all getting a little fix of live music here and there as live music tentatively peeps it's head over the parapet!
We will be heartily adhering to all health guidelines and in the event of any lockdown-y cancellations, worry not about logistics- I am a whizz at refunding!
